Motion & Balance

Does textiles can interact with people in a kinetic way?

What relationship should there be between humans and nature? This question has been asked for centuries. Many ancient philosophies recognized that humans and nature can not be separate. We are interdependent, humans and nature should be in a dynamic balance. But what is the balance?

The balance is not static and absolute, it is relative and dynamic. It keeps moving up and down in a certain range or certain degree. It’s like a satisfying motion which is hard to say but when you are in it you will feel it. In this project, I’m trying to challenge whether textiles can interact with people in a kinetic way?

Motion & balance

Sijia Zhang(Sica) graduated from the Royal College of Art Textile Design Mixed Media in 2020. She is good at exploring and studying the combination of the texture of materials and traditional textile design techniques, bringing new possibilities to textile design.

The series of works of Motion&balance are inspired by Sica’s observation and learning of nature. She raises the question: what is the relationship between man and nature? This question has been asked for centuries. Many ancient philosophies recognized that humans and nature can not be separate. We are interdependent, humans and nature should be in a dynamic balance. But what is the balance? Is it round? Is the scale? It's a still state?

Sica believed that textile design should be an understanding and designing of material, texture, and structure.

The textile design could be utilized not only in fabric but also in life. It could be jewellery, sculpture, or even architecture. The charm of Textile design also lies in how to make common materials produce new possibilities and bring higher value through the changes of texture, colour, and structure.

Through investigation, Sica found that the balance was not static or absolute, it is relative and dynamic. It keeps moving up and down in a certain range or certain degree. It’s like a satisfying motion which is hard to say but when you are in it you will feel it. In this project, Sica starts from the two aspects of structure and texture, trying to show this state of balance, trying to challenge whether textiles can convey this feeling of dynamic balance to the audience.

Structure experimenting

Starting from the balance in nature, Sica recorded the balanced movement in nature with video and presented it in the form of 3D abstract animation. At the same time, she thought about how to realize it with materials in real life. Starting from the track of graphic illustration, Sica presents it through three-dimensional weaving.

Meanwhile, she tests the changes in details generated by the flow of different media in three-dimensional weaving. To further explore the possibility of the interaction between textiles and people.

In terms of structure, try to use the structure to express the motion state of ups and downs. Using the laser cutting process, the acrylic plate has the potential of elasticity through the structure. On this basis, Sica tries to combine the acrylic structure and weaving techniques, in the process of movement, not only expanding the pattern changes in a two-dimensional structure but also exploring the structure changes in the three-dimensional space.

The reverse movement of acrylic and yarn makes the texture and structure in this space constantly change in their respective directions, and fluctuate up and down repeatedly. Explore the concept of dynamic balance.
