The concept of Winnie Yeung final project is ‘Growing’. The initial inspiration comes from aerial photography of tulip fields in The Netherlands. Instead of using pen or acrylics to draw and paint, Winnie uses the knitting machine as her drawing tool, and the different kind of yarn as the medium. Winnie loves experimenting with a range of knitting techniques and yarn combinations. Her first samples have become the visual and haptic inspiration for her next works. In addition, her research method is by observing the details of her samples and taking photographs to make further developments and improvements in the following iterations.

The main difference between knit and weave is the elasticity of the fabric. So Winnie did some research on weaving technics such as Swedish lace and LENO, in order to seek the possibility of combining the weaving concept into the knitted sample. Through such adoption, her work shows a tight stable structure which constrained the elasticity of the fabric. With this technic, Winnie’s knit work could show both elastic and inelastic feature in one.

The concept and technique ideas are applied to develop a stretchable fabric that can be stretched in a different direction!

Her color palette is inspired by Paul Klee. The color proportion and shapes are the insights she gained. Nave blue and mustard yellow are the main color of the project. The fabrics that she produces are free from fixed shapes and patterns but with unlimited potential to stretch in any direction needed. Winnie works can be worn in various ways.

The aerial photography of tulip fields in the Netherlands has inspired her the idea of pattern and shapes as well as the idea of knitting free-form.

In terms of material, she has explored the different texture of yarns such as mohair, wool, alpaca, and camel, in order to show the contrast of the handle of yarns. Winnie also uses Pemotex, Lycla and elastic yarn which enable her to illustrate the elasticity of the fabric.

The intended customer for Winnie’s work is someone who is extremely open-minded, someone who doesn’t like to be restrained.

Winnie Yeung

Winnie Yeung is known for her innovative and intuitive combination of material, texture, and color. She is passionate about knitting, working with both hand and machine processes. Her inspiration comes from her appreciation of everyday life, everything she sees, touches and does. Winnie says, "I like walking down a street, seeing different angles, compositions, collections of patterns and colors. I enjoy traveling, whether it would be a journey to college or a holiday to a new city, as I can look up and search for inspiration regarding my next project.
