This project is to create a tree’s secondary life and alternative charcoal products that can become part of our everyday life.

Yakisugi is the ancient Japanese technique of preserving timber. By carbonizing the surface of the timber instead of burning the whole piece, the timber becomes waterproof, pest resistant and, thus, long-lived. Yakisugi treated wood is frequently used as building material and is weather resistant. But, what interests me is that we are creating something else when we scorch the timber’s surface, Charcoal.

Charcoal is a by-product of charring timber. It is also an ancient and natural commodity. Originally it was used primarily as a fuel source, but now, is increasingly being used as an absorber and filter. One of Charcoal’s unique properties is that it is amazingly porous and absorbent. One gram of charcoal has a surface area of 150-300 m2, approximately the same surface area as one tennis court. The pores trap pollutants and household fumes thus, filtering the air, removing odour and retarding the growth of mould.

Based on these unique charcoal properties, I designed three everyday objects:

Shoe Storage - Deodorization

Bench with shoe storage. The inner side of the wooden boards is Yakisugi, the charcoal surface is used as a deodorizer to remove smells.

Fruit Bowl - Delays Deterioration

The fruit bowl has a Yakisugi interior, which absorbs ethylene from fruit and delays the ripening process, allowing fruit to be fresh longer.

Dry Food Container Set - Dehumidifying

The dry food containers also feature Yakisugi interiors. In this case, the charcoal is used primarily for dehumidifying, allowing dry foods to stay dry and reduce the risk of aflatoxin (mould).

Audience

The Yakisugi product targets audiences who are health conscious and care about sustainability. These groups of people are often trendsetters and are more likely to try new products and embark on different experiences. They will also look for products with a unique and quirky character.

Success

Success for this project is the adaptation of Yakisugi products, and by extension, charcoal products into the lifestyles of people not familiar with charcoal. Yakisugi products are a way to introduce people to the benefits of charcoal and hopefully lead them to adopt more charcoal products in their lives. Charcoal can do a lot more than just barbeque; it is an incredibly useful household material, especially for countries with a damp climate.
