Starry fingertips — The book is in the form of Dos-dos, opened from different sides according to different reading habits, which shows different constellation systems and the thought about the starry night in eastern and western. Although facing the same sky, people's imagination about distant and unknown is quite different.

The ripples of shade

The ripples of shade

Things shrouded by shade are always different. The more you gaze at the dimness, the more the dimness attracts attention like a vortex in the ripples of the shadows produced by the objects.

Starry fingertips /手可摘星辰 和  The ripples of shade 陰影的漣漪 是 Jiaxin Tang 湯嘉欣 於Royal College of Art 英國皇家藝術學院的2020畢業作品。

Jiaxin Tang interacts with art that demands time and sensitivity. Of concern are notions of time and space, a slow engagement with our surroundings both immediate landscape and environment, but also the macro, looking out into the galaxy and the feelings this evokes.

The focus is upon particular characteristics of printmaking and its traces my practices explore methods of working with materials. These include printmaking and related fields (such as the artist's book), paying attention to the subtle traces that are easily overlooked.

Jiaxin''s works share common interests in the territory of mark-making though with different emphases. They originated in the discussion of materiality where an element of intuition is implicit.

Starry fingertips/

I was making intaglio. The thing that attracts me the most is the trace of the metal plate embedded in the paper. This is an obvious imprint of intaglio but sometimes easily ignored. This kind of trace is a touchable shallow space with unique interactivity.

Starry fingertips / 手可摘星辰 is a book that can be interacted by touch.

The stars are far away in the distance, but touch is the most direct and intimate way of perception. Combined with the interactive nature of books, the starry sky is within reach of our fingertips and people's imagination of time is evoked through a sense of the books tactility and the embossed images on its surface.

The stars imply time out of mind.

This book is in the form of Dos-dos, opened from different sides according to different reading habits, which shows different constellation systems and the thought about the starry night in eastern and western. Although facing the same sky, people's imagination about distant and unknown is quite different.

The ripples of shade

During the day, the dusk is the longest.

I wait for the sun to slowly set, the room will gradually darken, and the outline of the entire space will become blurred. At this time, every minute has a different tone. I turned on the lights in the room as late as possible until it was completely wrapped in darkness, just to stay in that shade for longer.

The things covered by such a shade are always different, and even the sound seems to come through the more cloudiness air. The more you look at the dimness, the more the dimness attracts attention like a vortex.

The lockdown period of the epidemic brought many changes to life. The constraint of space makes people get rid of the limitation of time. This way of working like flowing water penetrates into my daily life. The importance of quietness makes me more sensitive to extremely limited materials.

The fineness and haziness of the gauze can be well hidden in the shadows, and a deep space is layered by dyeing different tones of gray. Somewhere in the darkest shadow, there is a shallow convex shape wrapped under fine nets, and the edge against the black background glows faintly.

‘Beauty is not in the thing itself, but in the ripples of the shadows produced by the objects.’
—In Praise of Shadow, Junichiro Tanizaki
