探索了傳統家具製造技術的 Noodle Chair 高脚凳


Noodle Chair 高腳凳是由是2017畢業於 Royal College of Art 英國皇家藝術學院 MA Prodoct Design 畢業生 Han Su 所設計,在設計中探索了傳統家具製造技術的更多可能性。


Noodle is a high stool design which explores the traditional furniture making techniques: steam bending and plywood. The making principle of two are similar, both make hard timber soft and then build shape into we want. That is a process from hard to soft and back to hard, so in this project, I tried to make some different curves and visually soft shape. 

Noodle Chair 高腳凳設計中探索了傳統家具製造技術的更多可能性。蒸汽曲木和膠合板技術中的工作原理類似,兩者使用不同的方法將硬木變軟,定型,恢復硬度。 項目中,Han Su嘗試做出一些不同的曲線和視覺上柔軟的形態。








Steam bending of timber tends to treat the material as a board that can only be bent in a single direction, And plywood manufacture is always too. This project considers timber as a string, or line, in order to find compelling ways to form the material in multiple axes. 

木材的蒸汽彎曲傾向於單一方向,並且膠合板技術也類似。麵條椅將木材看做柔軟的線材,以發現更引人注意的材料形狀。




The seat is constructed of several layers with more string-like curves. That gives stool more interesting appearance and some details. 
 

座椅部分由多層的木材薄板彎曲壓合做成,讓麵條有更柔軟有趣的外觀。



Multiple ‘strings’ have been twisted and laminated to explore the impact on the torsional and shear strength of a leg component. The twist alters the load-bearing point of timber, which provides an opportunity to build structures with less material.  These experiments show this thinking in relation to the legs for furniture.

扭曲和層疊後的“木線”探索了在家具腿部的剪切強度結構。這種扭轉改變了木材的承重點。這提供了同樣強度下減少材料使用的機會,並顯示了該項目中技術與結構的思考





Studying the techniques first, then through some process changes and morphological exaggeration, we can get something new. Making the proportion prototypes first, and tried new structure and shape as much as possible, testing the timber: oak, ash, mahogany, and beech. For this project, beech is the best choice. Also, the timber which used in steam bending must have smooth texture, if not, it will easily fracture in bending, that needs experiences.

首先學習這些技術,再通過製作過程的變化和形態上的誇張,可以得到一些新的東西。比例模型中嘗試新的結構和形狀,測試木材:橡木,樺木,桃花心木和櫸木。 這個設計中,櫸木是最好的選擇,此外,用於蒸汽彎曲的木材必須具有光滑平順的質感,否則在製作過程中極易折折,這須要大量的經驗。




Noodle Chair makes traditional techniques more attractive, and also reflects the value of these skills. In this project, I find the existing methods still have potential to improve。

Noodle Chair 讓傳統的技術更有吸引力,並且反應了這些有價值的,已經成熟的技術仍有很多的潛力來發掘。
